Curran Blackwell Named 2012 Soccer Captain

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney Soccer Head Coach Josh laux has named junior defender Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC/Greenfield) a captain for the 2012 soccer team. He will be a captain along with fellow junior Nick DeProspero (Midlothian, VA/Cosby), who was also a captain for the 2011 season. One additional captain may be named prior to the 2012 preseason.

Blackwell has been a tremendous asset for the Tigers ever since his freshman season in 2009. He has started and played in 55 matches in his career and has been one of the top defenders in the ODAC and region. In 2010, he was selected as a second-team All-ODAC performer. A valuable leader, Blackwell is consistently one of the hardest workers on the team and also provides vocal leadership both on and off the field. His athleticism and skills have also provided a big boost to the offense as he has accumulated 12 career goals, including a career-high six in 2011, chiefly off header shots on set pieces.

Coach Laux states, "The coaching staff was impressed with Curran's leadership from day one this season. He has been a rock for our team on and off the field. We had a strange season where we were actually much improved from 2010. We beat many of the top ODAC teams but had a ten day stretch where we faltered and lost three straight, ultimately costing us a playoff spot. We will need strong leadership to help our guys bounce back. Curran will help offer crucial leadership which we will need this off season as we work to return our team to the top of the ODAC standings in 2012."
