HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney soccer team tamed the Pride of Greensboro College 2-0 in non-conference action from Miller Field on Saturday afternoon.
In a game here neither team was able to produce much offensively with only 19 combined shots, the Tigers ability to capitalize on their chances and more stunning heroics by Duncan Oliphant (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) proved to be the difference.
With just under 15 minutes left in the first-half and the game still being a scoreless draw, a Tiger defender was whistled for a foul in the box, giving the Pride's Taylor Wyatt a penalty kick. In many cases, a penalty kick is a sure goal. With Oliphant in the net, that is not the case. Just as he did Wednesday against Virginia Wesleyan, Oliphant turned back Wyatt's attempt. He forced Wyatt to pick a shot and then quickly dove to his right once Wyatt shot the ball.
Just a couple minutes later, freshman standout James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) posted his third goal of the season off a Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA/York) pass. Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC/Greenfield) provided the insurance tally on a diving header off a Bo Burns (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) crossing pass at the 64-minute mark.
Oliphant recorded four saves on the day while Woody Wilder posted one save for the Pride. Greensboro outshot H-SC 10-9, but the Tigers held a decisive 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Hampden-Sydney will close out it's non-conference schedule on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest against against Ferrum College. H-SC will look to push its record to 3-0 against USA South Athletic Conference opponents after defeating Shenandoah 5-1 and Greensboro 2-0.
