Tigers Roll to 5-1 Victory

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Another big second-half enabled the Hampden-Sydney soccer team to breeze to a 5-1 victory over Shenandoah University in the Tiger/Wildcat Classic co-hosed by Randolph College. While both Randolph and H-SC went 2-0 in the Classic, Randolph wins the title via a +13 goal margin compared to a +12 for the Tigers.

Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC/Greenfield) corralled a loose ball in front of the net when the goalie couldn't hold on to the save and put in the back of the net to get the Tigers on board in the 16th minute. Freshman James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) continued his strong play at the beginning of his career with a goal off a double assist from Bryan Hughes (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Ryan Fleming (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) to send H-SC into halftime up 2-0.

Shenandoah's L.A. St. Hill put the Hornets on board in the 51st minute. The goal motivated the Tigers as the team played their best after the goal. The next Tiger goal was an own goal. A miskicked pass by an SU defender ended up going right back to the goalie, who initially caught it but the ball slipped through his hands and into the net. Hughes and Alex Thexton (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) teamed up together for the next two tallies. Hughes scores in the 74th minute courtesy of a Thexton assist, and Hughes returned the favor to Thexton seven minutes later.

The H-SC bench proved to be a major factor today as the contributions of Lawrence, Hughes, Bryan Barahona (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook), Thexton, Fleming, and the rest of the bench raised the energy and intensity level on the field. All but one player who contributed a point to the winning cause came off the bench. Hughes posted a goal and two assists while Thexton had a goal and an assist. Lawrence, Hughes, Blackwell, and Gregorio Pacheco (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) were named to the All-Classic team for their efforts this weekend.

Hampden-Sydney outshot SU 22-11. The Hornets had seven saves to none for the Tigers while H-SC committed seven fouls to just three for Shenandoah, but Shenandoah was also credited with four yellow cards.

Hampden-Sydney will travel to Lynchburg, VA, to participate in the Lynchburg Kick-Off Classic next weekend. The Tigers play Mary Washington on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and against Maryville (TN) at 1:00 p.m.
