McCLEAN, VA (September 10, 2005) – In a closely contested game between Hampden-Sydney College (3-1-1) and Marymount University (2-3), the Tigers dropped a heartbreaker by a final score of 2-1 in double overtime Saturday at Lewinsville Park, just outside of Arlington, VA. The loss was the first for the Hampden-Sydney Tigers in the 2005 season.
Momentum and opportunity sided with the Tigers early in the first half as freshman Chase Rowell (Columbia, SC/Spring Valley) scored an acrobatic, right to left hooking goal that he bombed out of mid air on an assist from senior captain, Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier). After continuing to control tempo for the first half, the Tigers held the lead 1-0.
In the second half, Maymount responded by improving their possession time and ultimately found the net at the 55:23 minute mark in the game. Senior, Nathan Franks (Oakton, VA/Oakton) scored on a header via an assist from Hector Villagomes (McLean, VA/Bishop O'Connell). Following the goal that tied the game, there was a marked level of increased intensity on both teams that led them into overtime.
Worth noting was the exceptional play of Marymount goalkeeper Brian Craddock (Herndon, VA/Oakton), who saved a last minute blast from Rob Johnson (Ft. Monmouth, NJ/Monmouth Regional ) in the final period and a low line drive header by Greg Smith.
The winning goal came at 104:42 in the second overtime as Gary Climo (Alexandria, VA/Mosslands) was credited with the header goal from a direct kick and pass from Naser Saleh (Reston, VA) and Michael Minthorne (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park).
The Hampden-Sydney Tigers play their next contest on the road against Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA at 7:00 pm.
