Christopher Newport took a 2-0 lead at 11:39 behind goals from Adam Abbate and Aaron Chrzaszcz before Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) got the Tigers first goal at 8:50. The Captains wasted no time negating the score as Nick Kirschke scored just six seconds later to keep their advantage at two, 3-1. Funk scored again to get H-SC back within one at 3:45, but CNU's Gregory Limon scored the final goal of the first quarter to lead 4-2 at 15 minutes.
CNU started the second quarter much like the first as they found the back of the net twice just seven seconds apart. However, Hampden-Sydney would score three of the stanza's final four goals to keep it at a two-goal deficit, 7-5, heading into halftime.
The two squads traded a goal apiece to start the third quarter. The Captains then scored the next two to go ahead 10-6, but two consecutive scores from Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) kept H-SC within striking distance at 10-8 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth period proved to be the major difference maker as a five-goal frame proved to be too much for the Tigers to overcome.
Armstrong paced the Tigers with four points on three goals and one assist, while Funk added on four goals. James Hughes (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) contributed three points on a score and two assists. Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC / Lake Norman) had a strong day on face-offs as he won 11-of-17 atempts with six ground balls.
Abbate led Christopher Newport with five points on four goals and one assist. Magdeburger had two goals and two assists. Matt Hayden proved to be the major difference maker as he posted 17 saves, and Kirschke went 14-26 on face-offs.
CNU went 16-for-19 on clears while the Tigers went just 7-for-13.
Hampden-Sydney plays at Cabrini on March 8 at 1 pm.
