HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The 2014 H-SC Lacrosse Tigers have announced their 2014 schedule that features a tough slate of six out-of-conference opponents matched with a highly competitive 10-team ODAC schedule. The Tigers will face four preseason nationally ranked opponents in non-conference Cabrini College (#7), and ODAC opponents Lynchburg College (#9), Roanoke College (#11) and Washington and Lee University (#13).
"We are very excited about the challenges we have within the 2014 schedule," commented Coach Ray Rostan. "We look forward to our opening practice and the opportunity to develop a team that will compete for an ODAC championship. Our daily focus during preseason will be upon developing team bonds that are palpably stronger each week."
The Tigers finished the 2013 season with an 11-6 record that included a victory over the #9 ranked team nationally, a 11-5 loss to the 2013 National Champions, and five one-goal losses.
The Tigers graduated one starter at each position from the 2013 team. The 2014 team returns seven seniors including team captain Bobby Fulton (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School), All-ODAC defenseman Ned Bowden (Crozier, VA/Collegiate), attackman Eric Gorsline (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy), and midfielder Arley Morelock (Frankfurt, Germany/Frankfurt International School).
A very large 17-man junior class will feature several talented starters and contributors who will be counted on at each position. At the all-important position of goalie, junior David Noftsinger (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) returns to lead the defense after a breakout sophomore year in which he earned All-ODAC honors. The defense that will include fellow juniors Casey Bendall (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's), Ali Salih (Clifton, VA/Middleburg Academy) and Hofstra transfer Thomas Passenant (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day).
At midfield, 2013 All-American Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) will team with one of the top athletes on the team, Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA/Western Albemarle), and savvy scorers Corey Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) and Fleet Jernigan (Kitty Hawk, NC/First Flight). Two junior attackmen return in James Hughes (Apex, NC/Middle Creek), a 2013 All-ODAC selection, and Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA/Middleburg); the pair combined for 75 points as sophomores in 2013.
The Tigers are also excited about several sophomores and freshmen who will be counted upon to play significant roles as they look to make a name for themselves early in their careers.
The team will open its 2014 campaign at the University of Mary Washington on February 15 for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
