Hampden-Sydney drops to 3-2 overall while the Captains improve to 3-2.
Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) opened the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 10:45 mark of the first quarter, and John Thompson evened the game at 8:12. Following a turnover, New Bowden (Crozier, VA / Collegiate) picked up the ground ball and ran down the middle of the field for the clear before passing the ball to Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA / Cosby) for a fastbreak goal with 1:14 to go in the quarter.
The Captains took a 3-2 lead in the second quarter after back-to-back man-up goals from Will Geise and Barber. Armstrong tied the game up at 3-3 with 4:52 to go in the half and Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) put the Tigers up 4-3 heading into halftime.
Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA / Collegiate) scored less than two minutes into the third quarter to put Hampden-Sydney up two goals. However, that would be the last time H-SC scored in the quarter. Aaron Chrzaszcz pulled the Captains within one just under three minutes later, and Thompson evened the game with 9:30 left in the frame. Neither team would score for over 15 minutes as the game went into the fourth tied at 5-5.
James Hughes (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) put Hampden-Sydney back ahead 6-5 with 9:03 left in regulation. Following a Christopher Newport turnover with under two minutes left, the Tigers cleared the ball and drew a one-minute slashing penalty with 1:40 to go. The Tigers would not capitalize and turned over the ball on an errant pass, giving the ball back to CNU with 1:03 to go. H-SC was able to force another turnover with under 40 seconds to go, but the Tigers turned the ball back over right away. The turnover proved costly as Billy Crist notched the game-tying goal with just 4.4 seconds left. Neither team was able to get off a shot at the goal as the game headed to overtime tied 6-6.
Ari Elgort won the face-off to start overtime, but the Captains turned it over deep in the Tigers offensive end after securing the ground ball off the face-off. Hawthorne fired off a shot at 2:15 with the 30-second shot clock in effect, but Andy McGregor saved the ball and the Captains converted on the clear. Alex Barber then scored the game-winner on the Captain possession.
Armstrong led the Tigers with two goals and one assist while Martin had one score and one assist. Five other players contributed at least one goal or one assist. Bowden had three caused turnovers and a game-high six ground balls while Austin Black (Dallas, TX / Plano) had two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
