Lacrosse Head Coach Ray Rostan Earns 300th Career Win
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse Head Coach Ray Rostan earned his 300th career win on Saturday. Coach Rostan is just the 11th head coach in NCAA lacrosse history to earn 300 wins, which includes all three divisions, and is currently the third winningest coach in Division III history.
Coach Rostan has an overall career record of 300-170 in 34 seasons as a collegiate head coach. In his 29 seasons at Hampden-Sydney, he is 260-145 overall with a 94-47 ODAC record. He has posted 23 winning seasons at Hampden-Sydney while winning four ODAC Championships and recording eight trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament. His H-SC teams have finished the season ranked in the USILA Top 20 Coaches' Poll on 17 occasions, including a #3 finish in 1998.
Coach Rostan has recruited and coached 61 All-Americans and four Academic All-Americans at Hampden-Sydney. Additionally, he has coached over 100 All-ODAC players, including five Players of the Year and one Scholar Athlete of the Year.
He has twice been awarded with the Francis "Babe" Kraus Memorial award given to the National Coach of the Year in college lacrosse, earning the distinction of being the first Division III coach to be honored with the award twice. Coach Rostan has also been named the ODAC Coach of the Year four times. He also has coaching experience on the international level as he served as an assistant coach in 2002 on the US National Lacrosse team that won the World Lacrosse Championships in Perth, Australia.
While his achievements and honors earned for success on the field are numerous, perhaps his most important accomplishment is the lasting impression on and development of young men. H-SC lacrosse alumni have gone on to be very successful in their lives after college, and Coach Rostan has served as an excellent role model for them. Players he has coached have gone on to be company vice presidents and presidents, owners of businesses, doctors and surgeons, engineers, physicists, high school and college coaches, and have served in the armed forces along with countless other professions.
"It's a testament to Coach Rostan's dedication to the sport of lacrosse, Hampden-Sydney College, and the hundreds of young men he has mentored over the years. He has consistently fielded teams which play the game the right way, with both heart and integrity, and this milestone is a poignant reminder of the tremendous success Hampden-Sydney's program has enjoyed during Coach Rostan's storied tenure at the helm."
