HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The #5 ranked Lynchburg College Hornets scored five goals in each of the first three quarters to beat the Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team 16-7.
The Tigers put the first goal on the board as Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA / Collegiate) scored at the 13:40 mark to put Hampden-Sydney up 1-0. Lynchburg then scored the next five goals to go up 5-1 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was much the same as the first with Corey Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA / Cape Henry) scoring at 12:07. Lynchburg then scored the next five goals to take a 10-2 lead at halftime.
Eric Gorsline (Virginia Beach, VA / Norfolk Academy) opened the third quarter with a goal from Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA / Cape Henry) at 13:53, and Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA / James River) followed with a goal of his own, courtesy of Gorsline, with 11:54 remaining in the third. Hampden-Sydney appeared to have their third goal, but it was waived off for a crease violation. Lynchburg scored the next two followed by a Micah Keller (Midlothian, VA / James River) goal. The Hornets closed the quarter with three more goals.
Ben Sauer scored the Hornets last goal with 12:11 remaining, and Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) and Keller closed out the game with a goal apiece.
Keller led the Tigers with two goals. Hawthorne scored once and added a team-high four groundballs while Nate Norbo (Waterford, VA / Loudon Valley) recorded three caused turnovers. Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, PA / Lower Merion) made seven saves.
Dylan Hoff and Andrew Wilfong each had three goals and one assist for Lynchburg while Sauer had two scores and two helpers. Jeff Schwartz won 13-of-his 17 face-offs with a game-high nine groundballs. Franc Cook made eight saves.
Hampden-Sydney will travel to Randolph-Macon on Wednesday for a 4 pm contest.
