WINCHESTER, VA-Hampden-Sydney golf teed off the 2011-12 season with a second place finish at the Shenandoah Fall Invitational. The Tigers were just one stroke behind champion Potomac State. Hampden-Sydney shot 16 over par as a team and was led by sophomore Rick O'Connell's (Goochland, VA/Goochland) third place finish. O'Connell was two over par via a 75 and 71.
Senior Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) was not far behind with a fifth place finish at three over par. Fultz shot par in round one and shot a 75 on round two. The Tigers had two other finishers in the top-ten with Trey Culley (Studley, VA/Hanover) and Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville). Culley was five over par via a 74 and 75 for a seventh place finish, and Gatz finished eighth with a 76 and 74 (six over).
Sophomore Brian Hickey (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) rounded out the team effort with an 18th place finish courtesy a 76 and 82 (158).
Freshman Drew Arnold (Chatham, VA/Chatham) participated as an individual and was the top finisher in that category shooting a 76 in both rounds.
Behind the second place Tigers' 16 over par was third place finisher and host Shenandoah, which was 44 over par. Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon rounded out the field with 49 over and 65 over performances, respectively.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action next weekend as it begins place in the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament on September 18 in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
