FARMVILLE, VA-Behind Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) and Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland), who finished second and third respectively, the Hampden-Sydney golf team took the gold at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational. The Tigers shot 20 over par as a team and finished 16 strokes ahead of second place finisher Ferrum. Averett rounded out the top three shooting 37 over par.
Fultz led the team with a second place finish while shooting a 71 and a 74 to finish the tournament one over par. O'Connell was just one stroke behind at two over courtesy a 68 and 78. Drew Arnold (Chatham, VA/Chatham) was the Tigers' third top-ten finisher. He tied for ninth as his 78 and 74 put him eight over par.
Trey Culley (Studley, VA/Hanover) shot ten over par with a 75 and 79 to tie for 15th place. Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville) rounded out the Tigers' A-team with a 21st place finish. His 78 and 79 put him 13 over par.
Hampden-Sydney's B-team, which finished in 10th place, was led by Brian Hickey (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County). Hickey finished 24th overall with a 78 and 81. Drew Noble (Richmond, VA/Steward) tied for 39th with a 24 over par (76, 92). Drew Smith was just four strokes behind Noble, and his two rounds of 86 tied him for 46th. Just one stroke behind Noble in 48th place was Page Smith (Melbourne, FL/Holy Trinity Episcopal) who shot an 83 and a 90. Rounding out the group was Daniel Adams (Charlotte Court House, VA/Randolph-Henry) with a 92 and 83.
Sam Thomas (Fredericksburg, VA/James Monroe) also played as an individual, placing 55th with a 93 and a 90.
Virginia Intermont's Trevor Banks took home medalist honors shooting a 69 and a 74 to finish one under par.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action next week at the Ted Keller Invitational in Glen Allen, VA.
