SANDESTIN, FL-In a field with 12 of the top 25 teams in the country and six of the top ten, Hampden-Sydney placed 15th overall in the Golfweek Division III Invitational in Sandestin, Florida. The Tigers, ranked 29th by Golfstat, were led again by sophomore Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) who placed tenth individually shooting seven over par in the three round event. O'Connell's best day came on round three, when he shot a round-best 67.
Senior Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) was just six strokes behind O'Connelll as he tied for 25th place. Fultz's rounds of 76, 77, and 73 gave him a 226 three day total.
Freshman Drew Arnold (Chatam, VA/Chatam) came in third for the Tigers and 69th overall shooting 25 over par courtesy an 81, 76 and 81. Freshman Trey Culley (Studley, VA/Hanover) shot rounds of 85, 81, and 81 to finish tied for 82nd place at 34 over.
Just three strokes behind Culley at 37 over with rounds of 80, 83, and 87 was junior Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville).
The Quakers of #7 Guilford College won the event, shooting 22 over par. Guilford's Noah Ratner won medalist honors coming in nine under par via a 66, 69 and 69.
Rounding out the top three were #5 Illinois Wesleyan and #1 Texas University at Tyler.
Golfweek's DIII Invitational wraps up the fall season for the Tiger golfers, and they will resume action this Spring. Their first event is Pine Needles Invitationalin South Pines, North Carolina. Action will begin February 27.
