JEKYLL ISLAND, GA-Freshman Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) led the Tigers as he placed 22nd out of 146 golfers with a three-day total of 220 (71, 76, 73). O'Connell and the Tigers placed 14th overall in the 29 team tournament hosted by Oglethorpe University. As a team, Hampden-Sydney shot 908 over three days (301, 308, 299). 22 of the 29 teams were ranked nationally in the top 50.
Junior Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) was seven strokes behind O'Connell and his 227 (75, 80, 72) was good enough for 51st place. Coming in third for the team and 64th overall was freshman George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) with a 230 (78, 76, 76).
Senior Mike Dowd (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) was consistant throughout, finishing 76th shooting a 77, 77 and 78 for a total of 232. Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville) rounded out the group with a 239 (82, 79, 78) for a 108th place finish.
Methodist University won the event with a total of 871 courtesy a 296, 283, and a 292. The individual winner was Centre College's Chris Morris. Morris boasted a 202 while shooting a 69, 66 and a 67.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action in the Camp Lejeune Invitational from March 25-27.
