WINTERGREEN, VA-This past weekend, Hampden-Sydney golf traveled to the Stoney Creek Golf Club to compete in the Virginia State Intercollegiate. The Tigers place fourth, shooting a 617, in the two-day, nine team tournament. Randolph-Macon and Roanoke tied for first place each shooting a 606 while Washington and Lee placed third just one stroke behind at 6-7.
Freshman Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) led the Tigers tying for seventh place with a two day total of 151 via a 77 and 74. George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) was not far off shooting a 152 (73, 79) which was good enough for tenth place.
Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) shot a 76 and 79 (155) which placed him 16th, and Mike Dowd (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) placed 19th with a 158 (80, 78). Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville) rounded out the group with a 31st place finish with a 167 (81, 86).
Washington and Lee's Tim Gaurich won the event shooting four under par with two 70s (140).
The Tigers return to action on October 25-26 for the Tom O'Brient Invitational in Greensboro, NC.
