CAMP LEJEUNE, NC-Senior Mike Dowd (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) shot two under par in the three-day Camp LeJeune Scarlet Division to lead all golfers and help the Tigers win the event. Dowd started out with a 69, followed by a 74 and 67 on the course. As a team, Hampden-Sydney was just 15 strokes over par while beating the other 14 teams in the competition.
Freshman Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) finished second for the Tigers and sixth overall with a three day total of 213 (68, 76, 69), just one over par.
Junior Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) was also solid for the Tigers, tying for 19th overall with a three day total of 220 (70, 75, 75). Sophomore Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville)was not far behind Fultz with a 29th place finish via a 233 (78, 73, 72) score.
Finishing 53rd individually was freshman George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) who posted totals of 75, 80, and 75 for a 230 total.
The win marks the first individual and team gold medal honors in 2011. The Tigers return to action April 17-19 as they compete in the ODAC Championship at the Bay Creek Golf Club in Cape Charles, VA.
