FARMVILLE, VA-Hampden-Sydney golf started the 2010 season on the right note with a fourth place finish in the Longwood Intercollegiate at the Manor in Farmville. The Tigers were the only non-Division I team participating in the nine team field.
Longwood University won the tournament, with four players placing in the top ten. The Lancers posted an 875 three round total. Coming in second with a 904 was High Point University. Loyola University had a third place finish with 907, while the Tigers rounded out the top four with a 925.
Leading the way for Hampden-Sydney was Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland), who placed 11th overall with a three day total of 224. His best round was the second of the first day where he shot a 73. Junior Ronnie Fultz (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) was not far behind with a 229, which was good enough for 15th overall.
Rounding out the Tigers' top team were George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park), who finished in 23rd place after shooting a 72, 83 and 79 for a total score of 234, and Mike Dowd (Richmond, VA/Collegiate), whose 238 was good for 27th.
The Hampden-Sydney 'B' Team finished in seventh overall and was led by Joseph Dail's (Mebane, NC/Eastern Alamance) 36th place finish with a 248. Daniel Adams (Keysville, VA/Randolph Henry) and Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville) came in 38th and 39th, respectively shooting a 250 and 251. Chason Trahan (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) was just three stokes behind with a 254 for a 40th place finish. Rounding out the Tigers 'B' Team shooting a 264 was Brian Hickey (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley).
Mount St. Mary's was the fifth place team. They were followed by Winston-Salem State, the Hampden-Sydney 'B' Team, North Carolina Central and Hampton Unversity. Longwood's Ross Summer was the individual winner shooting a 70, 71 and 73 for an overall score of 214.
The Tigers next return to action on September 27th-28th as they host the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at the Manor Golf Club.
