Late Rally Lifts Virginia Wesleyan to Win

Hampden-Sydney secured a one-point lead with 4:19 to play, but Virginia Wesleyan rallied to win 69-63.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The squads traded buckets on their first possession, but VWU scored the next six to go ahead 8-2 at 17:02
  • The Tigers trailed 16-9 at 8:54, but a 6-0 spurt found H-SC down just one, 16-15, following a Kevin Quinn three pointer at 7:17
  • The Marlins quickly responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a Tyree Golston dunk at 5:45 to go up 23-15
  • H-SC battled back one again and tied the game at 25-25 at 2:47, keyed by a Chaise Johnson triple followed by an and-one conversion
  • Lamont Steward and Keijon Honore provided the Marlins the next six points on consecutive trifectas, and Guilherme Guimaraes scored the last basket of the half on a layup to make it a 31-27 VWU lead at intermission
  • Johnson scored the first four points of the second half to tie the game
  • VWU went ahead on the next possession but the lead for either team would remain within six or fewer points the rest of the night
  • The Tigers secured their first lead of the night, 46-45, on a Hunter Kuehn layup at 9:47. However, Corey Pelham drained a three pointer 21 seconds later to put the Marlins back in front
  • With the Marlins leading 56-52 at 5:09, Malik Crute converted a three-point play on the next possession to draw the Tigers within one, then Kuehn followed with a layup at 4:19 to put H-SC ahead 57-56
  • VWU took control of the game from there as Golston scored the next five and Honoree connected on a shot beyond the arc to cap an 8-0 run and put the Marlins up 64-57 with 2:08 remaining
  • The Tigers halted the Marlins momentum with a Kuehn layup 10 seconds later, and a Guimaraes free throw trimmed the deficit to just four, 64-60, with 1:17 to play
  • Golston put the hosts in front by six with a layup at the 54-second mark, but Kevin Quinn drained a triple with 35 ticks left on the clock to make it a one-possession contest
  • The Marlins were able to close out the game on the foul line, finishing the game on a 13-6 run

FOR THE FOES

  • Keijon Honoree scored a game-high 17 points
  • Tyree Golston totaled 14 points, seven in the last four minutes, and added four rebounds
  • Lamont Steward posted 11 points, seven boards, and three blocks in just 15 minutes
  • Corey White tallied nine points and six caroms
  • Corey Pelham tacked on 11 points and four rebounds off the bench

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC outshot VWU 42.6% to 36.1%
  • The Marlins connected on 10 three pointers while the Tigers made five
