HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – With the Hampden-Sydney basketball team only losing two players to graduation, this year's recruiting class will be small but filled with three outstanding players.
Mitch Owens is a 6-7 forward from Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg, VA. Owens earned All-TCIS and First-Team All-State this past year and was a two-year captain. A scholar off the court, he earned academic First Honors as a senior.
Mike Murray comes to Hampden-Sydney courtesy of Norfolk Christian High School in Norfolk, VA. Murray, a 5-10 point guard, was a member of the Boo Williams AAU team. A decorated player, he was named the MVP of the TCIS Championship game, First-Team TCIS All-Conference, TCIS All-Tournament, and VISAA All-State as well as a 1,000 point scorer.
Sam Dale will have two years of eligibility remaining after transferring to Hampden-Sydney from Allegany College in Maryland. He graduated from Covenant High School in Charlottesville, VA. Dale, a 6-3 guard, was a two-sport athlete at Covenant. He earned First-Team All-State in basketball and was named the team MVP. At Allegany, he continued his excellence on the court as he was tabbed First-Team All-Region and was named the Best Defensive player. Dale also earned the Central Virginia Basketball award for Academic Achievement.
"We are excited to announce the addition of Mitch, Mike and Sam. All three come from highly successful programs and have been coached by some of the best in the state," said Head Coach Dee Vick. "We expect these young men to come in and compete for an opportunity to play. Competition drives our program, and I believe these student-athletes are up for the challenge. We have a strong nucleus returning, and our expectations are high."
These three players will join a team returning 15 players along with 77% of its scoring and minutes played.
