Guilford Outlasts Tiger Basketball 83-72

Ru White

GREENSBORO, NC-Junior Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) and senior Ru White (Chesterfield, VA/L.C. Bird) combined for 29 points and 20 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell 83-72 to Guilford in Wednesday night's ODAC action. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in ODAC play while the Quakers improve to 17-7 and 11-4 in conference.

Khobi Williamson (Norfolk, VA/Maury) added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) was the fourth Tiger to hit double figures with 10 points.

In a back-and-forth first half, the Tigers were the first to build a two possession lead as two straight buckets from George and Williamson put Hampden-Sydney up 15-10 at the 15:12 mark.

Guilford, however, kept the game close and eventually claimed a lead of its own. The Tigers would respond with George scoring ten of his team-high 16 points in the first half to take a 35-32 lead at intermission.

After White scored the first basket of the second half, Guilford used a 5-0 run to tie the game at 37-37. The game was tied again at 41-41, but the Quakers reclaimed the lead and a Will Freeman lay up put the home team up 50-43.

A basket and free throw from Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) made it a 50-46 game in favor of Guilford, but a 6-0 run gave Guilford the first double digit lead of the game at 56-46 with 12:42 to play.

Jessee hit a three that put the Tigers down six, but Guilford again pulled away to take a ten point lead.

Down the stretch, Hampden-Sydney would come within seven points, but the Quakers held on to their lead to take the victory.

As a team, Hampden-Sydney was 26-of-58 (44.8%) from the floor, 7-of-26 (26.9%) from beyond the arc, and 13-of-16 (81.2%) from the charity stripe. The Tigers dished out 15 assists to 16 turnovers. The battle of the boards was tied at 34-34.
