#23 Tigers to Open Season in Huntingdon College Classic

Ru White

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-#23 ranked Hampden-Sydney will open its season with five consecutive road games, including the season opening Huntingdon College Classic at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tigers will begin the Classic with a Friday night match up against LaGrange College.

The Tigers have met LaGrange once under fourth year head coach Dee Vick '94. Hampden-Sydney took an 83-72 victory at LaGrange on November 22, 2008 for Vick's first career win. The Tigers were led that day by Turner King's 29 points.

Hampden-Sydney is coming off of a 17-10 season with an 8-8 mark in ODAC play. The squad returns ten players and four starters - including last year's top three scorers Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville), Ru White (Chesterfield, VA/L.C. Bird) and Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) - from last year.

Though this is the first game for the Tigers, the Panthers, coming off of a 5-22 season, secured a season-opening 77-59 win over Oglethorpe under first year head coach Kendal Wallace. In the game, three players scored in double figures; sophomore center Joey Anderkavich led the way with 20 points, while Marcus Vaughn added 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Aaron Power notched 14 points while connecting on four of his seven three point attempts.

Hampden-Sydney's Saturday opponent - Huntingdon College - was not so fortunate in its season debut, falling 81-79 to Birmingham-Southern. The Hawks are coming off of a 12-14 season, but finished on a positive note defeating LaGrange in the GSAC Tournament Championship game.

After the Huntingdon College Classic, the Tigers will stay on the road with three match ups against USA South teams. On November 22, the Tigers will travel to North Carolina to face the Monarchs of Methodist University. Then they will compete in the fourth annual South Region Hoops Challenge facing Shenandoah on November 26 and North Carolina Wesleyan on November 27.
