HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Head coach Dee Vick has recently named seniors Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Ru White (Chesterfield, VA/L.C. Bird) captains for the 2011-12 season. The two were both captains and starters from last season's squad, which returns ten players and four starters.
"We have two exceptional leaders in our two seniors, Ben and Ru," commented Vick. "These two are not only two of our best players but also two of our hardest workers. They have prepared themselves for success, and we are proud to have them as members and captains of our basketball program."
Jessee, a four-year member and three-year starter, has 856 points to his name coming into this season. In 2010-11, the sharp shooter averaged 10.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists-per-game. From beyond the arc, Jessee led the team in three point percentage (35.7%), attempts (140), field goals (50), and field goals-per-game (1.85).
White is in his second year with the program and will look to build upon his immediate impact last year. Offensively, he averaged 12.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and a team-best 2.9 assists-per-game. White also showed his defensive prowess and versatility, with the ability to guard opponent's best players no matter the position. He posted team bests in minutes-per-game (30.2) and blocks (31) while his 35 steals were second best on the team.
"It is an honor to be named a captain for such a storied program," said the duo. "We are determined to leave our mark on this program by settling for nothing less than excellence. We are excited for this season and to lead this talented team back to the top of the ODAC."
Jessee, White and the Tigers will hit the hardwood and open up the season down in Montgomery, Alabama at the Huntingdon College Classic on November 18th and 19th. They will play against LaGrange at 5:00 PM central time on the 18th and Huntingdon at 1:00 PM central time on the 19th.
