Tiger Hoops Gear Up for Season with 5th Annual Tip-Off Banquet

Hampden-Sydney, VA-Over 200 fans, alumni, parents and players gathered recently at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond for the Fifth Annual Roundball Club Tip-Off Banquet. It was an evening to both celebrate and reminisce of seasons past as well as gear up for head coach Dee Vick's third season and the Tigers' 2010-11 season.

Athletic Director Joe Bush welcomed guests and thanked the Roundball Club, and its president Dave Wilson '63, for their support of the basketball program and help in developing other clubs supporting athletics at Hampden-Sydney. Wilson thanked the sponsors of the event, lead by Car Coop Inc., Ed Shield '63, and Laura and Don Whitley '59. A full listing of the sponsors can be found on the basketball website. He also spoke to the excellence on and off the court of the Hampden-Sydney basketball program. While winning ten ODAC Championships, the basketball team over the years has also produced an impressive team GPA, showing on Academic All-ODAC teams, valedictorians and student body presidents.

Senior Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) spoke on behalf of the players sharing his excitement for the season as well as expanding on his experiences thus far with the program. O'Neill is the lone senior this year, but the young Tigers are a talented bunch that have the potential to be a very exciting team to watch this season.

Coach Vick also made remarks, both thanking the Roundball Club for all of their support and his excitement for the season. Vick talked about all of the vast improvements the basketball program has seen in recent years. The Tigers have a new court floor, seat-back bleachers, a new locker room, and new banners for all of the schools in the ODAC. Vick introduced his 13-man team, including four freshmen and two junior transfers, and two new assistants - Rally Axselle and volunteer Tyrone Mosby.

It was a great night for all supporters and members of Hampden-Sydney basketball past and present to enjoy company and get ready for the upcoming season.

The Tigers will open their season on November 19 as they host Methodist University in the first game of the Hampden-Sydney Roundball Club Tip-Off Classic at 7:00 pm.
