NEWPORT NEWS, VA-The Hampden-Sydney football team fell 20-7 to Christopher Newport in a defensive battle on Saturday evening. After a scoreless first quarter, the Captains scored one touchdown in each the following three quarters and nearly pitched a shutout but Major Morgan (Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy) caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Alec Cobb (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale) with 37 seconds to go to put the Tigers on the board. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 1-1 while the Captains improve to 2-0.
Christopher Newport was able to control the game with 405 yards of offense to the Tigers' 245 yards while forcing four turnovers to the Tigers' one.
Yards were hard to come by in the first quarter, with each drive for both teams ending in either a punt or turnover on downs. The Tigers compiled a drive of 44 yards that they punted away and the Captains' top drive lasted 55 yards ending in a turnover on downs.
The Captains were able to break the scoreless tie early in the second quarter as a 19-yard touchdown pass from K.J. Kearney and a failed two-point conversion put the Captains up 6-0.
It was not until 3:19 left in the third quarter that the scoreboard changed, with the Captains scoring on another Kearney touchdown pass to go up 13-0.
Hampden-Sydney was forced to punt and Christopher Newport capitalized, taking the ball 68 yards in 11 plays to score for a 20-0 lead with just over 12 and a half minutes to play.
After each team had two unsuccessful drives, the Tigers used a 31-yard punt return from Kendall Blankenship (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) to set up a 36-yard scoring drive that put the Tigers on a scoreboard with 37 seconds remaining on the Cobb to Morgan connection.
Of the 245 yards for the Tigers, 200 came through the air and 45 on the ground. Cobb was 24-of-42 for 172 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions. Cam Johnson (Dillwyn, VA/Buckingham) and Carter Cunningham (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) each had a team-high six catches to go with a combined 109 yards. Morgan had five receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown.
Mike DeMasi (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox) had 12 of the team's 24 rushed with 31 yards. Johnson also carried the ball two times for 27 yards.
Defensively, the Tigers allowed 405 yards of offense on 243 passing and 162 rushing. The defense had a strong outing holding Christopher Newport to 20 points. Ryan Mallory (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) led the way with a game-high ten tackles. Matt Dooley (Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) and Mike Leopre (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond Suffolk) each had eight stops. Joe Everette (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) had five tackles to go with a fumble recovery, while Tanner Ramey (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) and Benjamin Carson (Winston-Salem, NC/Mount Tabor) each had a sack along with four tackles a piece.
Hampden-Sydney returns home next Saturday, September 16 as the Tigers host #13 Wisconsin-Platteville. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
