Football Bounces Back With 24-7 Win

BRIDGEWATER, VA-The Hampden-Sydney football team got back into the win column with a 24-7 road win over the Eagles of Bridgewater College. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC, while the Eagles take their first loss of the season and stand at 4-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

The Tiger attack was led by sophomore wide receiver Holton Walker (Lynchburg, VA/Brookville) who hauled in ten passes for 181 yards and two scores, marking his fourth consecutive game with over 100 yards. Sophomore quarterback Nash Nance (Calhoun, GA/Tennessee) completed 23 of his 32 passes for 291 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Points were hard to come by in the first quarter with a stalemate through the first three drives of the game. On the Tigers' second attempt – which started with 6:37 on the clock – the team drove 70 yards on just ten plays and with under three minutes to go in the opening stanza, Evan King (Lewisburg, WV/Episcopal) broke the 0-0 tie on a six-yard run.

The Hampden-Sydney defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing drive, and the Tigers fired right back with a 30-yard field goal from Max Antwerpes (Mainz, Germany/Kenston Forest) to go up 10-0 with just over nine minutes in the first half.

Bridgewater attempted to return the favor, but the 41-yard field goal missed the target.

The Tigers closed out the half with a touchdown from Nance to Walker on a five-yard pass. The score came with just 14 seconds on the clock and capped off a ten-play, 80 yard drive.

After a scoreless third quarter, Nance and Walker hooked up one more time – this time from 48-yards out – to put the Tigers up 24-0.

The Eagles were able to find the end zone six minutes later when quarterback Willie Logan plowed across the goal line from the one-yard line. Bridgewater then forced the Tigers to punt but was pinned on its own one-yard line. A 47-yard pass to Jayme Perry looked good for the Eagle faithful, but cornerback Zach Morgan (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) stripped the ball and recovered the fumble to give the ball right back to Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers tallied 446 yards of total offense with 291 passing yards and 155 coming on the ground. Senior Regis Craft (Nottoway, VA/Burkeville) had an impressive outing with 81 yards on 19 carries while King added 55 yards and a score on 17 carries. Along with Walker's production catching the ball, John Michael Sparagna (Mechanicsville, VA/Old Dominion) hauled in five passes for 57 yards.

Defensively, Russ Leboff (Amelia, VA/Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot) and Kenny Fryman (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) each tallied eight tackles. Charlie Shoemaker (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park), Tyler Ikwild (Philomont, VA/Loudoun Valley), and Alex Price (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) each recorded six stops while Leboff and Steven Fogleman (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) both sacked the quarterback.

Bridgewater totaled 314 yards of offense with 225 through the air and 89 rushing. Logan was 16-of-32 for 218 yards and earned 27 yards and a score on the ground.

Hampden-Sydney returns home and will face the Wasps of Emory & Henry on Saturday, October 13. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
