FOREST, VA-Following the #23 Tigers' 38-14 win over Ferrum College, senior wide receiver Kyle Vance (Onley, VA/Broadwater Academy) and sophomore free safety Sean Stewart (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon) were named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Vance broke Hampden-Sydney's single-game record for receiving yards as he tallied 228 yards and a touchdown on 14 receptions. Vance started out the day with two 19-yard receptions – including one touchdown – on the Tigers' first drive of the game that lasted under two minutes. Three of his other four receptions in the first quarter went for double digit yardage, including a 40-yard reception – his high for the day. He added three more receptions in the second quarter to end the half with 10 receptions for 155 yards and a score. He continued his work into the second half, with four catches for 33-, 18-, 7-, and 15-yards. Over the past two weeks, Vance has made 25 catches for 398 yards and five touchdowns. For his career, the senior stands as the Tigers' fourth all-time leading receiver with 1,993 yards.
Stewart patrolled the middle of the field for Hampden-Sydney's defense from his strong safety position, tallying a game-high 11 tackles on seven solo stops and four assisted. He also added 2.5 tackles-for-loss for a total of 12 yards. In addition, he forced a fumble that the Tigers were able to recover in the first quarter. Stewart helped the Tigers hold Ferrum to one touchdown per-half in opening the season 3-0. Through those three games, the sophomore has recorded a team-high 22 tackles - 2.5 for loss, two forced and one recovered fumble, and one interception to go with two pass break ups.
The Tigers return to action this Saturday as they travel to face Huntingdon College. Kick-off is set for 1:00 pm central time.
