Tigers to Open Season with Averett

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-This Saturday Hampden-Sydney will begin its 117th season on the gridiron as the Tigers host the Cougars of Averett University to kick off the 2011 season. Saturday's meeting will be the second match up between the two programs. Last season in Danville, the Tigers took a 45-30 victory behind 348 yards and four touchdowns from Travis Lane (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin). Hampden-Sydney ended up with a 9-1 regular season in 2010 while earning an NCAA Playoff berth and home game for the second consecutive season. Averett was 5-5 and 3-4 in the USA South at the end of 2010 and were picked to finish fifth in their conference this season.

The Tiger offense will again be exciting with the majority of the 2010 contributors returning. Saturday will feature the likes of Lane, 2010 First Team All-ODAC receiver Kyle Vance (Onley, VA/Broadwater Academy), 2009 ODAC leading scorer Kirk Rohle (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) and three-time First Team All-ODAC center Ben Rogers (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover).

Defensively, Hampden-Sydney graduated nine starters, but senior captain August Berling (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) and Second Team All-ODAC weak safety Steven Fogleman (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) will be leading the charge.
