LYNCHBURG, VA-The Lynchburg Hornets put up seven early runs to help defeat Hampden-Sydney 8-2 in conference action this afternoon. The two teams will turn right around and face off again tomorrow afternoon at Ty Cobb Ballpark. With the loss, the Tigers now stand at 11-13 overall and 5-6 in conference play; the Hornets improve to 13-15 overall and 6-9 in the ODAC.
The Hornets took their first lead with a run in the first and added another in the second, but it was the fourth inning that was the difference as Lynchburg scored five in the inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
After Lynchburg added one more in the fifth, Hampden-Sydney broke its drought with Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) knocking in Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River). Two batters later, Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian) scored on an RBI-single from Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale).
On the mound, Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach, VA/Colonial Heights) was the pitcher of decision, allowing four runs on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits and two walks while fanning three, and Trent Jacobs (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) and Joseph Crute (North Chesterfield, VA/Monacan) each threw a scoreless inning.
The Tigers will return to action tomorrow, April 11 as they host the Hornets in a 4:00 PM match up.
