LYNCHBURG, VA-The sixth seeded Hampden-Sydney Tigers took a 7-1 loss to top-seeded and 14th ranked nationally Shenandoah in the opening game of the 2014 ODAC Baseball Tournament. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 27-14 overall and will play in the Tournament's first elimination game at 11:00 AM tomorrow. The Hornets improve to 29-7 and will play at 2:30 PM tomorrow. The Tigers will face the loser of #2 Randolph-Macon and #5 Lynchburg; Shenandoah will play the loser of #3 Bridgewater and #4 Washington & Lee.
Shenandoah's Darrell Thompson pitched a gem, going the distance, allowing one run on ten hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Gray was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) and Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) also fared well at the plate, going 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively.
Joe Bittner led the Hornet offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Shenandoah tallied 14 total hits.
Trevor Otey (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) was the Tigers' pitcher of decision, allowing six runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) recorded one out and gave up one hit, and Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) allowed one run on two hits in the final two innings.
Hampden-Sydney now stands at 0-1 in tournament play, and will return to action Friday morning at 11:00 AM and face either Randolph-Macon or Lynchburg.
