Tigers End Regular Season with 7-6 Win Over Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team tied a school record, winning its 27 game of the season, defeating Greensboro 7-6 in the Tigers' regular season finale. The Tigers, standing at 27-13 overall and 10-10 in the ODAC, will enter the ODAC Tournament as the sixth seed and will face top-seeded Shenandoah at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 24 at Lynchburg City Stadium.

Hampden-Sydney used seven pitchers in the effort, with Mason Wright (Newsoms, VA/Southampton) picking up the win, pitching a scoreless seventh and allowing just one hit.

The Tigers were the first to hit the scoreboard, scoring two in the second on runs from Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) and Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) and an RBI-single from Joey Sutphin (Radford, VA/Radford HS).

Greensboro, however, used four runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead.

After a scoreless seventh, Hampden-Sydney used four hits to score five runs and take the lead. Greensboro loaded the bases, and Lung then drew a walk to keep the bases loaded and score Tommy Barlow (Hebron, MD/Delmar). Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) then stepped up and drove in Ryan Peevey (Wirtz, VA/Franklin) and Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point). Alex Smith (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) batted in the game-tying run, and Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) used a single to bat in the go ahead score.

The Tigers tallied 11 hits, and Rogers led the team, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) recorded one hit, extending his streak to 35.

Hampden-Sydney begins its quest for the 2014 ODAC Championship on April 24, kicking off the tournament against top-seeded Shenandoah at Lynchburg City Stadium.
