Baseball Downs Jackets 5-2

Spencer Wiles

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney returned to win column with a crucial 5-2 win over Randolph-Macon. With the victory, the Tigers improve to 24-13 overall and 8-10 in ODAC play; the Yellow Jackets fall to 19-13 on the season and 12-6 in the ODAC.

Starting pitchers Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) and Matt Fischgrund were hot to start, shutting out the opposition through the first three innings while each allowing just one hit.

Randolph-Macon, though, used two errors and two hits in the top of the fourth to claim the first lead of the day, scoring two.

Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) quickly responded, hitting a solo homerun in the bottom of the frame.

In the sixth, the Tigers tied the game as Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) led off with a double and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. They then took a 3-2 lead as Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) scored on an Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) sacrifice fly. Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) upped the lead to 4-2, batting in Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) with two outs. Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby), after extending his hit streak to 32 games, crossed the plate to go up 5-2 before the inning was over.

After two scoreless, Lewis moved to the mound to pick up the save.

Hampden-Sydney recorded 11 hits, with Gray, Chamberlin, and Wiles all recording two.

Johnson picked up the win, pitching six innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout. Trevor Otey (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch), Spencer Garrett (Mableton, GA/Whitefield Academy), and Lewis each pitched scoreless innings.

The Tigers wrap up their regular season ODAC slate as they hit the road for a Saturday double header against Emory & Henry. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
