LAGRANGE, GA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team remained perfect on its three day trip with a 6-3 win over LaGrange. With the win, the Tigers improve to 14-3 on the season while the Panthers drop to 3-12. The win also puts head coach Jeff Kinne at 224 career victories, just one shy of tying the program's all-time winningest coach, Stokeley Fulton.
Sophomore Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) picks up the win on the mound after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings.
The LaGrange Panthers took an early lead with a run in the first, but it was short lived as the Tigers tied the game in the top of the second with a Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) RBI to drive in Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville).
The Tigers then took the lead with four runs in the third on four runs and two errors. Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) led off the inning with a single and stolen base and was later batted in on a Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) RBI-double. Gray then scored when Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) hit a two-run homer. Lewis then scored the fourth run of the inning, taking off from third on a dropped fly ball by the shortstop.
LaGrange used two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 5-3 game, but the Tigers pulled away in the seventh with Chamberlin scoring on an Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, eighth, and ninth, Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/Bridgewater), Spencer Garrett (Mableton, GA/Whitefield Academy), and Aaron Stidham (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) each pitched one shutout inning while giving the Tigers' their third straight win and 14th of the season.
At the plate, the Tigers had 11 hits to LaGrange's nine. Chamberlin led the way with a 3-for-4 night with two runs and two RBI. Lewis and Tucker each recorded two hits.
Hampden-Sydney wraps up its three-game trip with a visit to Birmingham Southern tomorrow evening. The Tigers will clash with the Panthers at 5:00 pm.
