Hampden-Sydney Downs Ferrum 8-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney secured its third win in as many days, with an 8-2 victory over Ferrum College at Ty Cobb Ballpark Monday afternoon. Senior Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) picked up the win on the mound after pitching five scoreless innings, striking out eight. He also went 2-for-4 from the plate, scoring a run and batting in another. With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-2 on the season while Ferrum drops to 2-1.

Lewis and the Tigers struck early, as the senior was able to score the first run of the game in the first on a throwing error.

After a scoreless second and third innings, the Tigers pounced in the fourth, scoring five runs on six hits and an error. John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) led off the inning with a double, and he was later batted in by Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River). Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) followed Tucker with an RBI-double, and he was then later brought home on an error. Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) and Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) also scored in the inning with Wiles and Lewis each collecting an RBI.

The Tigers upped their lead to 8-0 in the seventh as Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) knocked in Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) with an RBI-double, and then later scored himself courtesy a Tucker RBI-single.

Ferrum did break the scoring drought with two runs in the top of the ninth.

Lewis went five innings on the bump, allowing just two hits and one walk with an impressive eight strikeouts. Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) went three scoreless, striking out one and walking four.

At the plate, Lewis and Tucker each recorded two hits. Lewis batted in a run and scored one, and Tucker drove in two while scoring one. As a team, the Tiger bats were alive with 12 hits to Ferrum's five.

The Panthers' Jake Perkins takes the loss after allowing six runs – just two earned – on eight hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Hampden-Sydney's next game, scheduled for February 12, has been postponed. The Tigers' next game on the schedule is a Saturday home double header against Stevenson. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
