Baseball Sweeps Marymount in Home Opener

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney won its first two games at Ty Cobb Ballpark this year with home opening victories of 6-0 and 7-0 over Marymount University. With the wins, Hampden-Sydney improves to 2-1 on the young season while the Saints drop to 1-3.

In the first game, the Tigers hit the board for the first time in the second inning, with Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) batting in Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) on a two-out single.

Hampden-Sydney struck again with two outs in the third as Ryan O'Hara (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) ripped a two-RBI single that scored Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville).

After Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) pitched his second three-up three-down inning, Hamlett batted Carneal in for the second time to put the Tigers up 4-0 in the fourth.

Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) helped tack on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with a double that scored Carneal and O'Hara.

On the mound, West picked up the victory after pitching five scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out four. Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) and Aaron Stidham (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Wiles was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, and Carneal scored three runs while going 0-for-1.

The Tigers carried their two-out magic into the second game with Hamlett reaching on a two-out triple before Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) batted him in with a single to break the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third.

Lewis lit up the scoreboard again with two outs, hitting a single in the fifth that scored Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) and Wiles.

After being batted in in the fifth, Wiles batted in Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) with an RBI-double. Wiles then later scored on a passed ball. Hamlett and Tucker also drove runs in with a sacrifice fly and walk, respectively to up the Tigers' lead to 7-0.

Freshman Trevor Otey (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) picked up the win after pitching four scoreless innings. Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) pitched two scoreless, and Spencer Garrett (Mableton, GA/Whitefield Academy) closed out the game.

Lewis was 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run; Wiles scored two while batting in another, going 1-for-2. The Tigers out hit Marymount nine to three.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow, Sunday, February 9, as they travel to Christopher Newport. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
