HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Head baseball coach Jeff Kinne announced his three captains for the Tigers' 2014 campaign. Seniors Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville), Aaron Stidham (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd), and Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) will lead the team this coming spring.
Lewis has been a four-year starter for the Tigers at third base, while also having a successful stint at pitcher in 2013. On the mound last season, Lewis had an impressive 4-1 record in ten appearances and five starts. He threw 37.2 innings, striking out 33 while walking just ten to go with a 3.11 ERA. At the plate, he batted .288 with 44 hits, 24 runs, 19 RBI, and four doubles. As a freshman, Lewis earned First Team All-ODAC honors.
Stidham made an impact last season on the mound for the Tigers, starting in six games while appearing in 11. In his 43.1 innings pitched, he had a solid strikeout to walk ratio, fanning 27 batters to his 14 walks. He also had a 4.36 ERA and one save to go with a 3-2 record.
Tucker, a two-year starter, has improved in each of his seasons with the Tigers and had his best last season in center field. In 2013, he was third on the team in batting average with an impressive .344 mark with 53 hits in 154 at bats. He was also second on the team in both doubles (16) and triples (1). He scored 28 runs while batting in 25 more.
The Tigers will open their 2014 season on February 1 as the travel to Danville to take on the Cougars of Averett University at 1:00 pm.
