Tigers Fall 7-5 to Jackets in ODAC Tourney Day One

Beau Flinchum

LYNCHBURG, VA-Fifth seeded Randolph-Macon upset second seeded Hampden-Sydney 7-5 in the first day and second game of the 2013 ODAC Baseball Tournament. With the loss, the Tigers – at 21-16-1 overall – will face sixth seeded Roanoke College (18-20, 10-10 ODAC) in the Tournament's first elimination game at 11 AM tomorrow.

Randolph-Macon wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with the first five batters recording hits and scoring four runs.

The Tigers, however, responded in the bottom of the first as Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) hit a two-RBI double to score Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville).

After a scoreless second and third, the Yellow Jackets added one more run in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Hampden-Sydney later matched that run in the seventh with Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) scoring on a muffed throw to third base.

The Jackets again extended their lead with two runs in the eighth to go up 7-3, but the Tigers responded yet again.

James Keller (Fredericksburg, VA/VMI) led off the inning with a walk; Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) came in to pinch run, advanced on a Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) single, and later scored on a John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) RBI-single. Kuhns later crossed home plate on a Hamlett sacrifice fly.

Both closers came in in the ninth and did their job. Hampden-Sydney's Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) shut down the Jackets and then Will Jennings then finished off the game in the bottom of the ninth while allowing just one walk.

Randolph-Macon recorded 15 hits to the Tigers' 11. Flinchum hit a team-high two hits with two RBI. Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) also recorded a team-high two hits.

Sophomore Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) took the loss after allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings; he struck out four. Aaron Stidham (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) then pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.

Randolph-Macon's Matt Fischgrund picked up the win after allowing two runs on six hits and two walks in six innings. He also struck out eight.
