LYNCHBURG, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team completed a season sweep of defending ODAC Champion Lynchburg College on Tuesday afternoon with an 8-3 victory. The Tigers, who improve to 14-13-1 overall and 7-5 in the ODAC, recorded 18 hits to Lynchburg's eight. The Hornets fall to 16-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
Junior righty Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) picked up the win after allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings. He struck out six batters while walking just two. Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) then closed out the game with two shutout innings.
The Tigers wasted time not only getting on the board but claiming a big lead with six runs in the first inning. Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) led off the game with a single and that started a run of six consecutive hits and four runs before the first out of the game. In the stretch, Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) tripled, and Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) and Lewis each doubled.
The Hornets scored one in the bottom of the inning, but the Tigers fired back in the third with John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) batting in James Keller (Fredericksburg, VA/VMI) and Lewis batting in Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford).
Over the course of the next six innings, the Tigers recorded eight more hits but were unable to cross the plate.
Lynchburg added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough.
Chamberlin had a game-high four hits while Tucker recorded three to go with two RBI, a triple, and one run. Lloyd went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and a sacrifice fly. Lewis, Keller, and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) each had two hits.
Hampden-Sydney returns home to host the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday, April 4. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
