SALEM, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball won both games of its Saturday ODAC-opening double header against the Maroons of Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. The Tigers outscored Roanoke 25-10 in the two games while winning 8-5 and 17-5. With the wins, Hampden-Sydney improves to 9-7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference while the Maroons drop to 5-9 and 1-3 in the ODAC.
In both games, the Tigers were greatly helped by big innings. The team trailed Roanoke 2-1 through four innings, but six runs in the fifth pushed the Tigers a lead they would not surrender. Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) both scored before Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) blasted a grand slam over the fence to give the Tigers a nice cushion.
Hamlett then scored for the third time in the game as Lewis batted him in in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) improved to 3-0 while allowing four runs on ten hits in 4.2 innings. He struck out two and walked one. Aaron Stidham (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) then picked up the save, allowing just one run on two hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
The big innings came much earlier for the Tigers in the second game with five runs in the first and three more in the second for a quick 8-0 lead. The long ball was still in play with James Keller (Frederickburg, VA/VMI) hitting a three-run shot in the first and Hamlett hitting a two-run homer in the second.
Keller batted in two more in the fourth to help the Tigers put five more runs on the board. Hamlett also recorded an RBI-single, as did Flinchum and Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair).
Flichum and John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) added two more RBI each; Flichum batted in seven on the day.
Freshman Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) picked up the win while allowing just one run on five hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
On the day, Hampden-Sydney recorded 29 hits. Hamlett finished the day 4-for-10 with six runs scored and three batted in. Lewis was 4-for-8 with three runs and one RBI. Lloyd was 5-for-9 with four runs and four RBI.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Wednesday, March 13 as the Tigers take on Randolph-Macon in Ashland. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
