Comeback Pushes Tigers to 6-2 Win

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Tiger baseball team was down 2-0 in the third inning to SUNY New Paltz, but used six runs spread out over the final five innings to secure a 6-2 victory. Sophomore ace Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) earned his fifth career complete game victory after holding the Hawks to just two runs on six hits. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 3-6-1 while the Hawks drop to 1-1.

Neither team could get any offense going in the first two frames, but it was New Paltz to strike first with two runs in the top of the third.

Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) then put the Tigers on the board with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth. Three innings later, Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) led off the inning with a single, scored the game-tying run, and then Tucker scored the game-winning run as Jack Elliott (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) batted him in.

The Tigers were then able to add three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Gray and John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) each batted in a run and scored one of their own, and Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) batted in Gray on a double.

Hampden-Sydney recorded 12 hits to the Hawks' six. Elliott had a game-high three hits in four at bats, and Gray and Tucker each went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI each. Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) also went 2-for-4 while batting in one run.

New Paltz's Andrew Grann was the pitcher of decision, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow, Sunday, February 24 in the final day of the Ty Cobb Classic as they face Moravian at 3:00 pm. The first game of the day will feature Rutgers-Camden and SUNY New Paltz at 11:00 am.
