NEWPORT NEWS, VA-Hampden-Sydney started the game red hot with a 5-4 lead over eighth-ranked Christopher Newport, but the Captains proved to be too much, scoring the final 12 runs of the game to claim a 16-5 victory Monday afternoon. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 0-3 while Christopher Newport improves to 1-0.
The Tigers wasted no time to get the action going as Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) led off the inning with back-to-back walks. James Keller (Fredericksburg, VA/VMI) then batted in Hamlett, and Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) reached on an error that allowed Lung to make it a 2-0 Tiger lead.
Christopher Newport took its first lead in the bottom of the frame as Justin Weaver and Curtis Pittman each had two-RBI singles to put the Captains up 4-2.
The offense continued as a throwing error allowed Hamlett to score to bring the Tigers within one. Sophomore Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) then cleared the fence with a two-run homer that gave Hampden-Sydney the lead back at 5-4.
The Captains, however, took over scoring 12 runs over the next four innings while their bullpen held the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Senior Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton), freshman Reggie Johnson (Dunnville, VA/Essex), and sophomore Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) combined to hold Christopher Newport scoreless over the final three innings.
Senior Aaron Van Allen (Danville, VA/Tunstall) was the pitcher of decision, allowing seven runs on three hits and four walks in an inning of work. He also struck out two.
Each team notched ten hits, and Keller lead the Tigers with a 3-for-5 performance with one RBI. Gray finished the day 1-for-3 with a homerun, two RBI, and two walks. Six other Tigers recorded one hit.
The Tigers will return to action and remain on the road on Thursday, February 7 as they travel to face North Carolina Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm.
