Baseball Falls in Season Opening Double Header
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball took two losses in its season opening double header with 4-3 and 11-3 decisions to Averett University at Ty Cobb Ballpark. The Tigers start the year 0-2 while Averett stands at 2-0.
With runs in the third and fourth, Averett held the early 2-0 lead. Hampden-Sydney, however, got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) crossed the plate via a Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) RBI double.
Averett, however, was able to reclaim the lead with two runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning.
The Tigers had a near comeback in the bottom of the frame; Lewis had an RBI single to score Flinchum and load the bases with just one out. The Tigers could not capitalize hitting into a double play to end the inning.
Senior Dan Nicoll (Centreville, VA/Bishop Ireton) picked up the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in three innings. Averett's Cody Moore was the winning pitcher while giving up two runs on seven hits in five innings.
Neither team could score in the seventh, giving Averett game one. The Tigers managed eight hits to Averett's ten but were hampered by four errors.
The Cougars' bats came alive to start the second game, scoring eight runs in the first two innings to jump out to an early 8-0 lead.
Rookie Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) then pitched three scoreless innings while allowing just two hits with three strikeouts. While Hinson held the Cougars off the scoreboard, Hampden-Sydney tallied three runs.
The Tigers tacked on one more run in the fifth with Collins batting in Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River).
Averett controlled the final two innings with three more runs to claim the 11-3 victory.
Lewis took the loss after allowing eight runs - three earned -in two innings. Ben Florence was the winning pitcher. He threw five innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
On the day, Lewis was a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and an RBI. James Keller (Fredericksburg, VA/VMI) also recorded three hits in seven at bats. Gray and Wiles each notched two hits and one RBI, and Gray scored a run as well.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Monday, February 4 as the Tigers travel to face the Captains of Christopher Newport. The first pitch is set for 2:00 pm. Christopher Newport will be providing live stats which can be found here.
