HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Methodist used eight runs in the first two innings to take a 9-2 victory at Ty Cobb Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 11-23 and is 6-8 in the ODAC; the Monarchs improve to 21-18 overall and are 6-6 in the USA South.
Methodist recorded 11 hits to Hampden-Sydney's six. After Methodist scored four runs in each of the first and second inning, Dalton Renick (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) pitched the next four innings, allowing just one run on one hit. He also struck out two and walked three.
Sophomore Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the eighth as his two-RBI triple scored Chatham Wurdeman (Elkin, NC/Elkin) and Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point).
Luke Brunot (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) pitched three shutout innings for the Tigers, allowing just one hit and two walks.
Methodist's Michael Judge was the winning pitcher throwing two scoreless innings. Tyler Younger and Brandon Thigpen led the Methodist offense with two hits each. Younger also had a team-high three RBI.
Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) was the Tiger's pitcher of decision, allowing eight runs on nine hits in two innings.
Wiles was impressive at the plate with a 2-for-3 day to go with his run scored.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 18, as it travels to Virginia Beach to take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC double header. The first game is set for 1:00 pm.
