LYNCHBURG, VA-Hampden-Sydney out hit the Hornets of Lynchburg College 7-6 but could not cross the plate as Lynchburg took a 3-0 decision at Fox Field in Lynchburg on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 9-17 overall and 4-5 in the ODAC. The Hornets improve to 23-6 and 9-2 in conference play.
Runs were hard to come by as Lynchburg scored one run in the first and two runs in the second, but Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) and Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) combined to shut the Hornets out over the final seven innings. Rabiej took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out four while walking just one. Birnbaum allowed just two hits while striking out one in the final three innings.
Lynchburg's Michael Mansfield picked up the win after allowing six hits in seven scoreless innings. Brandon Miller picked up the save after surrendering one hit in two innings.
Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) recorded a game-high two hits while five other Tigers each recorded a base knock.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Thursday, April 5 as it travels to Winchester, Virginia to face #18 Shenandoah. Game-time is set for 6:30 pm.
