FERRUM, VA-Though both Hampden-Sydney and Ferrum recorded six hits, the Panthers were able to score five more runs as they took a 7-2 win over the Tigers on Thursday night. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 7-13 on the season while the Panthers improve to 16-8.
Ferrum was able to score two of its seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The lead was expanded upon when Ferrum added a run in the third.
Hampden-Sydney broke its drought in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game. Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) led off the inning with a walk and was later batted in by Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River).
Junior starter Aaron Van Allen (Danville, VA/Tunstall) did his part to keep the Tigers in the game pitching three scoreless innings, but the Tigers could not capitalize before Ferrum added two more runs in the seventh.
Allan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) scored for the Tigers in the eighth, but Ferrum responded with two more runs for its final lead of the night.
Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) led the Tiger bats with two hits.
Van Allen took the loss after allowing three runs on just three hits in six innings. Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) gave up two runs on one hit in an inning, and Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) allowed two hits on two runs.
Ferrum's Chris Madison was the winning pitcher allowing one run on four hits in six innings.
Hampden-Sydney will return home this Saturday as it hosts Washington & Lee in an ODAC double header starting at 12:00 pm.
