HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball Tigers scored five runs on 12 hits, but it was not enough as the Greensboro Pride took a 12-5 victory at Ty Cobb Ballpark. The Pride improves to 8-5 overall while the Tigers fall to 4-8.
Greensboro wasted no time getting on the board with two runs in the first inning and three in the third to take a 5-0 lead after two and a half frames. The Tigers then crossed home in the bottom half of the inning as Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) scored on a Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) RBI single after leading off with a double.
Though the Tiger bats were quiet, Greensboro tacked on three more runs over the next four innings to take an 8-1 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers cut into the lead as Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) batted in Hamlett and Christian Clifton (Danville, VA/George Washington).
The Pride fired right back in the top of the eighth with two more runs on two hits.
Hampden-Sydney scored in both the eighth and ninth with Clifton batting in Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) and Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) batting in Kuhns, but it was not enough as the Pride scored two of their own in the ninth.
Kuhns was nearly flawless from the plate going 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Herrmann, Flinchum, and Hamlett all recorded two hits as well.
Ten pitchers took the mound for the Tigers with Dan Nicoll taking the loss. Michael Cobb picked up the win for the Pride, allowing just one run on six hits in six innings.
Hampden-Sydney will remain at home and return to action Saturday, March 10 as it hosts Guilford College in a double header. The first pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
