Tigers Fall 4-1 to Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team took a 4-1 loss to Greensboro Tuesday night at Leonard Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 4-6 overall while the Pride improves to 7-3.

Freshman Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) started on the mound allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work but took the loss. Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) gave up two runs on two hits in an inning, and Adam Netherland (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) and Aaron Van Allen (Danville, VA/Tunstall) each pitched one scoreless inning.

Offensively, the Tigers hit the board in the second inning as a sacrifice fly from Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) scored Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville).

The Pride, however, scored two runs in the fourth and fifth that proved to be enough for the victory. Michael Cobb picked up the victory after allowing one run on just two hits in six innings.

Freshman Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) led the Tigers offensively with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate. Lewis and Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) also recorded hits.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Thursday, March 1 as it hosts the Captains of Christopher Newport University. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
