HAMDPEN-SYDNEY, VA-In the fifth and final game of the Fifth Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament, Franklin and Marshall scored five runs on ten hits to defeat the host Hampden-Sydney Tigers 5-2. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 4-5 and goes 1-1 in the Tournament. Franklin and Marshall improves to 2-1.
The Tigers got off to the early as lead as Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) scored the first run of the game after leading off the inning with a single. Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) extended his hit streak to nine consecutive games while batting in Wind.
The Diplomats, however, slowly built their lead with two runs in the second and one run in the third, seventh, and eighth innings. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Evan Lang did not allow another run in his six innings pitched.
The Tigers again reached the scoreboard after Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) scored in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not enough.
Dan Nicoll (Centreville, VA/Bishop Ireton) took the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out three batters and walked two. Kyle McKay (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) combined to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings, and Aaron Van Allen (Danville, VA/Tunstall) allowed one run on one hit in an inning of work.
The Tigers return to action, Tuesday, February 28, as they travel to North Carolina to face Greensboro College. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
