HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Giants of Keystone College recorded 12 hits while downing the Tigers 7-1 in the second day of the Ty Cobb Classic. Hampden-Sydney falls to 3-4 on the season with the loss, while the Giants improve to 1-1.
Junior starter Dan Nicoll (Centreville, VA/Bishop Ireton) pitched three scoreless innings before Keystone knocked in two runs in the top of fourth to take the initial lead.
On the mound for the Giants was Rob Rogers, who made life difficult for the Tiger offense striking out seven batters in the first three and a third innings before surrendering his first hit of the day off of Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run).
The Giants extended their lead in the sixth with a run to take a 3-0 advantage.
In the eighth, however, the Tigers got on the scoreboard as Herrmann recorded his second hit of the day while batting in Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby).
3-1 was as close as the Tigers would come as Keystone tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth to fall 7-1.
Nicoll took the loss after allowing two runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) allowed one run in 3.2 innings.
Rogers picked up the win after pitching five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out eight.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action February 24-26, as it begins the Floyd B. Wilcox Tournament. The Tigers' first opponent will be Rutgers-Camden at 3:00 pm on Friday.
