Tiger Baseball Falls to CNU on the Road

NEWPORT NEWS, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball took its first loss of the 2012 season falling 17-2 to #7 Christopher Newport University. With the loss the Tigers fall to 2-1 overall while the Captains start their season at 1-0.

The Tigers started out the game with back-to-back singles from Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) and Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby). Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) later batted in Wind to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

CNU responded, however, with five runs in both the second and third to take a commanding lead.

Herrmann hit the Tigers' first homerun of the season in the fourth inning, but it would be the final run of the Tigers who would fall.

The Tigers collected five hits with Herrmann going 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Wind, Zeb Cope (Advance, NC/Davie County) and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) also recorded hits.

The Captains went 20-for-47 from the plate with a game-high four hits from Connor Madden.

Four Tigers pitched, and Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) picked up the loss. Bryan Bierlein picked up the win for the Captains after allowing two runs on on three hits in six innings.

Hampden-Sydney will return to the friendly confines of Ty Cobb Ballpark on Saturday, February 11 with a double header against the Mustangs of Stevenson University. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
