Tiger Baseball Opens 2012 Season with 5-3 Win Over Ferrum
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball Tigers claimed a 5-3 win at Ty Cobb Ballpark today over Ferrum College in the 2012 season opener. Junior righty Dan Nicoll (Centreville, VA/Bishop Ireton) picked up the victory after pitching six scoreless innings. Nicoll struck out five batters while walking just one.
Hampden-Sydney was the first to hit the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) led off the frame with a single, and was later batted in by Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River). Later in the inning, Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) batted in two runs as his single scored Allan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) and Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby).
The Tigers struck again in the bottom of the seventh as Hamlett recorded an RBI as his single scored Tucker.
Ferrum responded in the top of the eighth with three runs of their own. Wes Walker hit a single to bat in two runs, and a third scored on the play on a throwing error.
Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Hampden-Sydney added to its cushion. Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) led off with back-to-back doubles, and Flinchum later hit a sacrifice fly to score Kuhns.
Nick Caporale (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) then closed out the game in the ninth inning recording a save while allowing just one hit.
Ferrum's Chris Walker picked up the loss after allowing four runs, three earned in six and two thirds innings.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, February 5, as it hosts Mary Washington. The first pitch is set to be thrown at 1:00 pm.
