HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-After winning the first game of the day 4-3, Hampden-Sydney let go of a 6-2 lead trailing 9-6, only to score four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs to sweep the Mustangs of Stevenson University. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 4-2 overall while the Mustangs drop to 0-2.
Though Stevenson took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Tigers took just two batters to tie the game, with Herbie Williams (Danville, VA/George Washington) hitting a leadoff double, followed by a Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) RBI single.
The Tigers pounced again in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the day. The leadoff men again did their job, with Nick Caporale (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) singling, and Alan Brownell (Herndon, VA/Herndon) picking up the RBI double.
The 3-1 lead was short lived, however, as Stevenson knotted it up at 3-3 in the top of the fifth.
The Tigers fired right back, with Martin sneakily rounding the bases. The senior was walked, stole second, third and home for the game winning run.
Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) then picked up the save with two scoreless innings on the mound.
The Tiger bats came alive in the second game, putting together 17 hits in the win. Hampden-Sydney used the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead with two runs from Williams and one from Caporale. On the mound, senior Mike Blanchard (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) pitched three shutout innings.
Though the Mustangs rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth, Hampden-Sydney matched with three of its own to take the 6-2 lead. The Tigers started the inning with the first four batters reaching base safely. Martin picked up two RBI, and Williams recorded one. Williams also scored a run of his own along with Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) and Beau Flinchum (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover).
Stevenson responded, scoring four unanswered runs to tie the game at 6-6 in the seventh. The Mustangs then scored three more in the top of the ninth to take a 9-6 lead.
After seeing the first two batters retired, Freshmen Colby Carter (Manakin-Sabot, VA/Goochland) and Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) recorded back-to-back singles. Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) then knocked in a two-RBI double to make it a 9-8 ball game. Wind then stepped up for the game tying RBI-double.
Williams then stepped up to the plate to hit the walk off RBI.
For the game, Williams was an impressive 5-for-6 with three runs, two RBI, two triples and two stolen bases. Connor Bradley (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) was able to pick up the win.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Tuesday, February 15 as it travels to face the Greensboro Pride at 3:00 pm.
